Kinect Sports is back, and it’s looking better than ever. Kinect Sports: Season 2 introduces a roster of new sports: American Football, Baseball, Darts, Golf, Skiing and Tennis in another Xbox 360-exclusive title. The very lucky Stephen Ebert headed over to developer Rare’s studio for a full lowdown with Rare Studio Manager Scott Henson.
The original Kinect Sports was the flagship game for Microsoft Kinect – the Xbox 360 camera accessory that lets you play games using just your body. Kinect Sports: Season 2 will be amongst the first breed of Kinect-compatible games that will not only let players use their body, but also, their voice.
Speaking exclusively to The Gadget Show, Rare Studio Manager Scott Henson says Kinect Sports: Season 2 builds on what made the original so popular thanks to improved gesture recognition, the addition of voice commands and a new Challenge Play mode.

“We’ve able to make huge improvements with precision and tracking. We have innovated new gestures. Last year we were throwing huge javelins, this year we’re throwing darts – it’s very precise. We’ve able to make huge improvements with precision and tracking. We’ve also made the blend of gestures and voice into a really cool unique experience.
“My favorite is actually American Football. In one minute you can call a play, throw the play and be running downfield. Think about what happened there. You just used your body and voice in a way that you weren’t thinking about because you were just playing the game, but there’s a lot of innovation that made that come together to create that experience.”
Challenge Play is a new addition that lets Silver and Gold Xbox Live members send challenges to friends and family to beat them over Xbox Live. It might be a high score, or a milestone achievement in a sport. Whatever it is, that challenge can be sent over for anyone to beat, showing up in a list of challenges that can be accessed at any time, conquered, and sent back and forth. ??“I was one of the founders of Xbox Live, and for a long time I’ve really believed that asynchronous play is a huge way for people to connect with one another. So having that be a centrepiece of our game and the way people are gonna connect is awesome. I love it,” Henson says.
A combination of being “easy to play, yet difficult to master” gameplay makes Season 2 addictive enough to keep fans coming back to the game long after its planned October 25th release, says Henson.
“We wanted to make it even simpler for people to get into. That’s a very difficult challenge to accomplish in a video game.??“There are very few games in the world that do this. This is the holy grail – a game that is easy to play, yet difficult to master that we’re all trying to get at.”
The next step towards that holy grail could be voice control, because Henson reckons the future of gaming will be controlled using the power of our vocal chords, as we’ll soon be talking to our consoles as if it were a sports coach, teaching us how to play, and become better at games, whilst improving our sporting technique. “In darts we do very minor versions of that in visual cues. We’re giving you hints as to what you should be doing. You’ll see a little coach in the right hand corner. Can we learn and continue to improve so your technique gets better? Absolutely. This is the future of how people will learn and get better at games. It will slowly learn how you’re playing, and if you want to continue to master it, it will continue to give you coaching and guidance as you play through the game.”
But in terms of voice control? “I think you can quickly look at Golf and American Football [in Kinect Sports: Season 2] and extrapolate what that might mean for lots of other sports and games. ??
“FIFA and Madden are great examples. I think all genres would be open for voice control. Anything where you have to make a choice, like Halo. Why would I need a switch between a light and a grenade? Why don’t I just use my voice to do that stuff? I’m not trying to design a Halo game [laughs], I’m just saying that voice is a hugely powerful tool for us to continue to do what we can do with video games. ?I mean look at what Mass Effect’s doing, what a great use of voice technology in my opinion. I think there are lots of applications for voice technology.”
But for now, Henson and the guys at Rare are doing all they can to deliver what the studio hopes will be another well-received sports game. And it sounds like there’s much more to come, with Kinect Sports: Season 2 downloadable content on the way. ??
“The cool thing about Xbox Live is it’s possible for us to add all kinds of things. I’m very excited when we do actually reveal exactly what we’re gonna do, and I think all of the above are on the table, so stay tuned because in the weeks and months ahead you’ll find out more.”
Kinect Sports: Season 2 will be released on October 25th, exclusively on Xbox 360 for Microsoft Kinect. Will you be buying it?
